We Are A Second Opinion and Medical Consultation Clinic for Movement Disorders

7 to 10 million people worldwide live with Parkinson’s disease. Many more suffer other movement disorders. Yet, whatever their condition, they face limited access to care due to a severe shortage of trained specialists, clinical care providers and specialized surgical teams.

At GNC, we listen. We help you understand your illness. And we help you receive state-of-the-art care. We specialize in deep brain stimulation (DBS) and other neuromodulation therapies. In the course of evaluating a patient for DBS, we may also make important recommendations about optimizing medications and other treatment approaches. Thus, even if DBS is not for you, we still may be able to help.

We serve as consultants for you and your primary care physician. We work with you, your local physicians and healthcare professionals to develop treatment plans that best serve your healthcare needs.  Click on the tabs below to read an overview of some of the diagnoses for which we can serve as a consultant.

  • Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement.  Symptoms of this disease may include tremors, stiffness or slowing of movement. DBS most consistently benefits patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, which must distinguished from such forms of atypical Parkinson’s disease as Multisystems Atrophy (MSA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

Not only do we assist the patient, but we offer training and ongoing support for the local physician that carries out principle, day-to-day care.  GNC has served as a resource for physicians and healthcare providers worldwide. Referring physicians receive consultation and training with ongoing patietnt-specific communication regarding advances in treatment options including, but not limited to, DBS. Together we work to ensure newly diagnosed patients get off to the right start and that all patients receive optimal care.

  • Essential Tremor

Essential tremor (ET) is a nerve disorder that results in uncontrollable shaking, or tremors, in different parts of the body, including hands, arms, head, larynx, tongue, and chin.  By targeting the thalamus, where the abnormal brain activity causing ET is thought to originate, DBS can offer moderate relief for patients affected by ET and may be an appropriate form of treatment after other medical options have been exhausted.

  • Dystonia

Dystonia is a neurological movement distinguished by sustained or repetitive muscle contractions.  These contractions may result in twisting, repetitive movements, or abnormal fixed postures.  The movements may resemble a tremor. Dystonia may worsen as a result of physical activity, and symptoms may progress into adjacent muscles. Deep brain stimulation works most effectively for people who have a genetic form of dystonia or for those where the dystonia has no identified cause this is called idiopathic. Unfortunately, DBS does not work as well for the majority of those with acquired dystonias, which have a non-genetic cause such as cerebral palsy, a disorder of the metabolism or brain damage.

  • Tourette's Syndrome

Tourette’s syndrome is a problem with the nervous system that causes people to make sudden movements or sounds, called tics,  that they can’t control.  DBS for Tourette’s  is available in limited cases for clinical care.
